On-Farm Disease Prevention
National Swine Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard - CSHB:
Good biosecurity practices have proven to prevent diseases from entering the barn. Special focus should be given to pig movements, personnel and visitor (CAZ and RAZ) entry protocols, transport vehicle sanitation, deadstock removal, and manure handling practices.
Turning your farmyard into a CAZ:
CAZ = Controlled access zone = entry to yard
RAZ = Restricted access zone = entry to barn
Read Turning your farmyard into a CAZ by Mark Fynn, Manitoba Pork's Manager of Quality Assurance and Animal Care Programs, from the Canadian Hog Journal Summer 2017 edition.
Danish Entry System – South West Ontario Veterinary Services:
Danish entry systems are used to separate dirty areas from clean areas, and should be present at all entrances to the barn (RAZ). Outside footwear must stay in the dirty area; outside clothing must stay in transition (or dirty) area; and barn clothes, towels and footwear stay in the clean area.
Site Entry Protocols for Service Providers – Manitoba Pork:
Service providers that move from farm to farm pose a legitimate risk of spreading disease if they do not follow adequate protocols for visiting sites. They should always contact the farm manager ahead of their visit and follow the farm’s entry protocols for entering the CAZ and the RAZ.
Establish a Line of Separation (LOS) – National Pork Board (US):
The Line of Separation (LOS) is the line between an area considered to be “clean” (e.g. your barn) and an area considered to be “dirty” (e.g. a livestock trailer). Make sure no one and nothing passes from the dirty side to the clean side without the proper sanitary precautions. If you must cross the LOS, wear dedicated/disposable footwear and clothing for the task.
Characteristics of Selected Disinfectants – CFSPH Iowa State University
Disinfectants Proven Effective against Coronaviruses – EQSP:
Disinfectants act to inactivate pathogens and can be extremely effective when applied to a visually clean surface. Different disinfectants have different effectiveness against different pathogens, depending on their type, concentration, and contact time. Only certain disinfectants are effective against coronaviruses, such as PEDv.
Disinfection in Freezing Temperatures – EQSP:
At temperatures below freezing, propylene glycol (PG) can added to disinfectants to delay them from freezing and allow adequate contact time to kill pathogens. As much as 40% PG (by volume) must be used in the disinfectant solution to allow adequate contact time below -20°C.
Biosecure Deadstock Removal – National Pork Board (US):
Locate deadstock bins away from the barns, preferably near a public access road. Make sure farm vehicles/workers do not need to cross the same path as deadstock haulers. Always wear designated clothing and footwear when disposing of deadstock.
Feed Delivery Protocols for Disease Control – Ontario Pork
Feed Delivery Biosecurity – National Pork Board (US):
Feed delivery personnel should not enter the barn and should only access the area around the feed bins. Feed trucks should be fully washed and disinfected at least once weekly and immediately following a visit to a high-risk site.
Biosecure Manure Pumping Protocols for Pork Producers – National Pork Board (US):
Manure haulers should have a separate access way at the farm to access the manure storage area, preferably outside the CAZ, so as to avoid crossing the same path as farm vehicles and workers. Farm personnel and equipment need to avoid any direct contact with manure hauling personnel and equipment.
