Biosecurity Farm Training Program

Manitoba Pork Council (MPC) has partnered with the Canadian Swine Health Board (CSHB) and Manitoba Agriculture and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) to improve biosecurity in the province's pork industry. The newly-formed partnership has launched the National Biosecurity Farm Training Program and PRRS Zero-Prevalence Program.

Each participating producer will be able to claim $5,650 per site through this program.

To participate, producers must attend a half-day training session that will introduce them to the program and outline possible biosecurity enhancements. Just for attending this session, producers will be reimbursed $150.

These sessions will be conducted by training program veterinarians (see list below).

At these sessions, producers will be introduced to the National Swine Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard and will be provided with a biosecurity action plan self-assessment, in which they can propose an on-farm biosecurity enhancement for their site.

Upon approval of the self-assessment – including the proposed enhancements – by a program vet during a scheduled site visit, producers can claim $500 per site to help them offset the costs of making enhancements.

The program will also include on-farm diagnostic testing for the prevalence of PRRS virus. The veterinary expenses will be covered for up to $500 for the site visit and $500 for PRRS testing. The results of the PRRS testing will be provided to the producer and will be confidential.

Producers will then implement their approved biosecurity enhancement(s), and the program vet will make another site visit to confirm the approved enhancement has been made. The program will reimburse up to $5,000 for the enhancement with 90% covered by the program and 10% covered by the producer.
