Caring for Animals

Manitoba pig producers know that responsible and humane care is important to the well-being of pigs. Not only do they enjoy working with animals, but they also know from experience that content and healthy pigs make good economic sense. Manitoba’s producers have led the pork industry in promoting welfare practices and researching new and better ways of doing things.

Manitoba Pork Council highly recommends that producers follow the welfare practices covered in the Code of Practice For the Care and Handling of Farm Animals developed by the Canadian Agri-Food Research Council. These codes of practice were written to encourage all people involved with livestock to practice and promote sound animal care.

One of the considerations for housing pigs is how many to keep in how much space. In other words, how much space does each pig need? Manitoba Pork Council’s “Welf-o-meter” calculates for you how many pigs of a certain size can be housed in the same pen.

As part of their regular routine to ensure the health of the pigs, producers also follow strict biosecurity protocols. Click here to download our factsheet "Biosecurity Basics."
