Manitoba Pork Council applauds groundbreaking on Farm and Food Discovery Centre
December 14, 2009 (Winnipeg, MB) – Manitoba Pork Council (MPC) congratulates the University of Manitoba on taking the next step to bring to life a new facility that will connect people and agriculture. The university officially broke ground today on construction of the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre south of Winnipeg.
The new centre promises to demonstrate how food is produced, and to showcase agricultural practices in Manitoba. It will feature galleries on crop production, livestock and food safety, along with a classroom for school or professional groups.
“The Farm and Food Discovery Centre is very important to pork producers because folks from all walks of life will be able to learn and see for themselves how pigs are raised,” says Karl Kynoch, MPC Chairman. “In fact, the centre will showcase the advances all farmers have made in terms of protecting the environment, providing excellent animal care and producing safe, high quality food.”
This one-of-a-kind facility is expected to attract up to 30,000 visitors per year. It will feature interactive displays for the public to learn about the many aspects of food production and processing, from farming practices to retail sales.
MPC has contributed more than $600,000 toward creation of the centre. Local companies Cultural Visions and Number 10 Architectural Group are providing project management and building design services. The new centre is expected to open in 2010.
Manitoba Pork Council represents the province’s 800 pork producers. Manitoba Pork…Locally Grown. Globally Preferred.
