Livestock Attendant – Agriculture Attendant 3 (AESES)
Existing Budget-Funded Continuing Full-Time
40.00 hours/week 8 hours/day; rotating shifts including some evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Salary Range: $21.12 – $30.34 per hour ($43,929.60 – $63,107.20 per annum)
Proposed Start Date: June 23, 2025
Trial/Probation Period: 1044.00 work hours
Posting End Date: May 26, 2025
Responsibilities :
– Participate and carry out the daily animal care routine for the facility (e.g., feeding, weighing, cleaning, washing, and disinfecting) including all record keeping.
– Participate and carry out the daily animal processing routine for the facility (e.g., vaccinating, castrating, probing, breeding, farrowing) including record keeping.
– Check for daily water and feed supplies in waterers/feeders and maintain adequate feed inventories and records as required.
– Ensure all regulations and industry quality programs are adhered to during day-to-day operation of the facility.
– Daily maintenance, repair and cleaning of the facility.
– Assist with animal selection, transportation and shipping and other duties as required.
– Ensure proper execution, recording and documentation of research support activities as they relate to the facility.
– Assist Facility Supervisor in setting up research trials with the Principal Investigator including outlining the tasks and duties that will be provided.
– Understand and assist with the research protocol requirements and standards while research projects are underway. – In the absence of the Facility Supervisor (Ag Attendant 4) plan, organize and direct daily work plans and schedules.
– Provide supervision to direct reports and in the absence of the Facility Supervisor provide oversight to any others working within the facilities.
– Assist the Facility Supervisor with the organization and documentation for the training of all staff and the electronic record keeping consistent with staffing, staff performance, workplace safety, WHMIS and quality programs.
– In the absence of the Ag Attendant 4 ensure all timesheets are properly recorded and submitted on time to the appropriate recorder and all vacation, absences and banked time are recorded.
– Assist with delivery of lab sessions, training and tours.
– Provide supervision to students or visitors to the facilities when required. – Demonstrate correct techniques in animal care and handling.
Qualifications :
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
– An agricultural degree or diploma from a recognized university or college is required.
EXPERIENCE:
– Two years of directly-related experience in the care and handling of pigs in a farrow-to-finish operation is required.
– An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
– Proficient in using a personal computer, specialized databases (e.g., PigChamp) and computerized record-keeping systems such as Excel is essential.
– Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the University of Manitoba’s animal care and transportation policies is preferred.
– Ability to operate, handle and maintain farm machinery and equipment, vehicles and other farm-related equipment is required.
– Effective verbal and written communication skills required. – Interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with students, staff and the general public, is required.
– Effective decision-making skills with the ability to use sound judgement required. – Accurate record-keeping skills required.
– Ability to perform calculations, compile and summarize records, and prepare reports is required. – Sound observation skills required.
– Ability to handle and care for animals is required. – Knowledge of animal husbandry practices required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
– A valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License is required.
– Adequate physical condition for lifting, carrying and handling heavy objects required.
– Must be free of allergies to dander, dust, odour, and ammonia.
– Must possess a philosophy compatible with animal-based research.
– Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
