Fairmont Winnipeg

Manitoba Pork Council 60th AGM and Banquet.

All individuals who market pigs within the Province of Manitoba are required to register to Manitoba Pork in accordance with the Manitoba Hog Producers Marketing Plan Regulation. To register as a pork producer in Manitoba, please email info@manitobapork.com to be provided with a producer registration form.

Manitoba Pork also registers all swine premises on behalf of Manitoba Agriculture. To register your premises, re-register after a change in ownership, or register for PigTRACE to transport pigs, please email info@manitobapork.com.

The Manitoba Pork Credit Corporation (MPCC) administers the Advance Payments Program (APP) for the hog sector in Manitoba. MPCC administers the program for all hog producers in western Canada. The APP is made available to Canadian farmers through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Under the program, eligible producers (who must own the animals covered under the program) are able to receive a cash advance up to a limit of $1,000,000. The first $250,000 is interest-free, allowing producers to meet short-term financial obligations. The cash advance is available for weaned piglets, feeder pigs, market hogs, and breeding stock (gilts, sows and boars). Livestock is not eligible once it has been sent for slaughter.

Financial Statements

The Governments of Canada and Manitoba recently entered into a new five-year funding agreement called the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). A breakdown of Sustainable CAP priority areas and funding opportunities available for Manitoba producers can be found on the Manitoba Agriculture website.

Manitoba Pork will notify producers as new Sustainable CAP funding opportunities are announced. Producers are encouraged to act quickly as application windows are often quite short.

The Canadian Pork Council (CPC) has engaged a consulting firm called Ryan to identify and compile a listing of all federal and provincial funding opportunities available to hog producers in each province. The current listing of funding programs available for Manitoba producers can be found here.

Developing a new hog barn or expanding an existing hog barn is a complex process requiring technical review by experts from various provincial departments and agencies as well as approval from the local municipality.

To assist producers in navigating the barn application and approval process, Manitoba Pork has developed the following guide outlining the steps along the way, and the information and technical expertise required to complete a barn application.

Starting or Expanding a Hog Farm in Manitoba

A key component of a successful barn application is a good working relationship with the local municipality. Manitoba Pork and the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) collaborated in developing a guide outlining the barn application and approval process and providing advice for both producers and municipal officials on ensuring the application process runs as smoothly as possible for both parties.

If producers desire assistance with navigating the barn application and approval process, Manitoba Pork offers consulting assistance through the Swine Infrastructure Development Corporation (SIDC). SIDC consultants are available to assist producers with arranging necessary technical experts, holding public consultations, and working through the provincial technical review. More information on the range of SIDC services can be found in the following producer guide.

Canadian Pork Excellence is the national platform that covers three major components of on-farm programs: traceability, food safety, and animal care. The three programs that make up Canadian Pork Excellence are:

  • PigTRACE – the industry-led, live animal traceability initiative designed to ensure protection, prosperity and peace of mind for the Canadian pork industry and its customers
  • PigSAFE – the program that provides a mechanism for producers to demonstrate their implementation of sound production practices that promote safe food production
  • PigCARE – the revised Animal Care Assessment program that considers the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs.

More information on these programs can be found by clicking here.

Manitoba Pork contributes significant dollars each year towards swine research to help ensure the future success and prosperity of Manitoba’s hog sector. Research priorities include enhancing on-farm production efficiencies, animal health and animal care, and environmental sustainability. Summaries of previously supported research efforts can be found on the websites of Manitoba Pork’s key research partners:

In collaboration with Sask Pork, Manitoba Pork engaged DGH Engineering Ltd. to develop detailed budget estimates to construct various new hog barns in Manitoba’s 2023 construction market. The cost estimates are for reference purposes only but will provide producers with a rough estimate of current construction costs.

The 2023 cost estimates update similar estimates prepared by DGH Engineering Ltd. in 2017-18. Please contact Manitoba Pork to obtain copies of the earlier cost estimates.

Manitoba Pork has created an ambassador program specifically for hog farmers and industry experts who want to tell their stories. Farmers are seen as the most credible source of agricultural information! Because of this inherent trust, pork producers and industry experts in Manitoba are well-positioned in their communities to provide positive and accurate information about our dynamic industry to build public trust.

As a PORK PROUD ambassador, you’ll receive hands-on training to effectively communicate the local benefits of the sector and modern food production while promoting how Manitoba’s hog and pork sector makes a meaningful social impact. Training sessions include a mixture of required and optional workshops in a variety of subject areas including answering tough questions, storytelling through social media, written communications, and media training. PORK PROUD ambassadors can work at some of Manitoba Pork’s community engagement events to tell their story directly, with support from Manitoba Pork staff.

Ambassadors also receive a robust information kit including fact sheets, Q&As, and all relevant training documents and receive free access to PORK PROUD branded swag. For more information on the program and upcoming training sessions, contact: Kristen Matwychuk at kmatwychuk@manitobapork.com.
