Environment and Sustainability

Manitoba Pork and Manitoba’s hog farmers work hard to ensure their operations are safe, sustainable and productive and are committed to upholding a holistic approach to sustainable production through management practices that are science-based, transparent, and responsive to the environmental, social, and economic needs of farmers and the communities they live in.

Working together with key stakeholders such as the Canadian Pork Council (CPC), Swine Innovation Porc (SIP), academic institutions and government departments and agencies, Manitoba Pork is funding research that is benchmarking the hog sector’s current greenhouse gas emissions, land base requirements and water usage and will enable the adoption of innovative best management practices that will further protect our natural environment and allow the sector to respond to climate change.

Manitoba Pork recently developed its Sustainability Framework that transparently outlines the Manitoba hog sector’s sustainability vision, goals and commitments. The Framework builds on previous sustainability efforts, including Embracing a Sustainable Future plan and will align with sustainability efforts being made at the national level led by the Canadian Pork Council.
