Manitoba Pork is the representative organization for all pork producers in Manitoba, with a mission to foster the sustainability and prosperity of the hog sector for the good of pork producers and all Manitobans.
Location: Manitoba Pork office, Winnipeg, MB
Term: 16 weeks, May 6 – August 30, 2024
Hours: 20 - 36.25 hours / week
Wages: $20.00 / hour, no benefits. Mileage and expenses for approved work purposes reimbursed.
Eligibility: Applicant must have completed first year of post secondary education.
Preferred area of study: BSc in Agriculture (Agribusiness, Agroecology, Food Science, Human Nutritional Sciences, Animal Systems, Agronomy), Diploma in Agriculture, or a Diploma in Creative Communications.
Tasks and Opportunities:
The successful candidate will work primarily in the area of Public Relations, Communications, and Learnings, but may have the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge across other areas of Manitoba Pork’s work. Opportunity to continue working on a casual basis if both parties agree.
The summer student will be assigned projects overseen by Manitoba Pork staff. Activities may include, but are not limited to:
• Assist with Manitoba Pork’s participation at various sponsored public and community events, including being an informed presence.
• Assist with the Pork on a Bun program, including operating and towing the mobile barbecue cart, maintaining commissary and carts, picking up supplies, etc.
• Assist with fulfilling sponsorship requests.
• Assist with the execution of the Make it Pork! Meal Kit program, including procuring supplies, assembling meal kits, and delivering kits to schools.
• Assist with the preparation for and behind the scenes of Manitoba Pork’s presence on the Great Tastes of Manitoba tv show.
• Assist with communications needs as required, including taking and categorizing photos, as well as writing, reviewing, and editing copy as needed.
• Assist with filling orders for Pork Proud promotional items and wearables.
• Other duties as assigned.
Some weekends required. Some driving, including towing a trailer, required.
Essential Skills:
• Strong written and verbal communication skills (including proper telephone, email, and social media etiquette).
• Ability to prioritize and work resourcefully and independently.
• Organization and attention to detail.
• Ability to plan a project and follow through.
• Ability to work on several projects at one time.

• Outgoing personality, ease in meeting or connecting with new people.

• Able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
• Ability to communicate pork production practices to a non-agricultural audience is an asset.
• Past experience in customer service is an asset.
• Knowledge of online graphic design programs is an asset.
Required Knowledge:
• Knowledge of pork industry and livestock production practices is an asset.
• Understanding of food safety practices.
• Computer proficiency (MS Office, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
Other Requirements:
• Applicants must have a valid Manitoba Food Handler’s Certificate.
• Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record, as well as access to reliable transportation.
• Applicants must be physically able to lift 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
