On farm service providers offer essential services to Manitoba producers. It is very important for producers to communicate with service providers prior to their visit and relay pertinent biosecurity information related to their required task. Depending on where on the premises a service provider is set to work, the CAZ or the RAZ, will dictate the instructions and the protocols they will receive. Communication is key to effective biosecurity.

Service providers that move from farm to farm provide a legitimate risk of spreading disease if they do not follow adequate protocols for visiting sites. They should always contact the farm manager ahead of their visit and follow the farm’s entry protocols.

Disinfectants Proven Effective against Coronaviruses – EQSP:

Disinfectants act to inactivate pathogens and can be extremely effective when applied to a visually clean surface. Different disinfectants have different effectiveness against different pathogens, depending on their type, concentration, and contact time. Only certain disinfectants are effective against coronaviruses, such as PEDv.

Disinfection in Freezing Temperatures – EQSP:

At temperatures below freezing, propylene glycol (PG) can added to disinfectants to delay them from freezing and allow adequate contact time to kill pathogens. As much as 40% PG (by volume) must be used in the disinfectant solution to allow adequate contact time below -20°C.

Feed Delivery Biosecurity – National Pork Board (US):

Feed delivery personnel should not enter the barn and should only access the area around the feed bins. Bagged feed should be limited and should be delivered to a separate farm building. Delivery personnel should wear clean clothes and disposable boot covers when delivering feed. Feed trucks should be fully washed and disinfected at least once weekly or immediately following any visits to high-risk sites.

Biosecure Deadstock Removal – National Pork Board (US):
Deadstock pick-up should occur away from the barns, preferably near a public access road. Deadstock haulers should not need to cross the same path as farm and delivery vehicles/workers.
